"I Just Got Diagnosed. What Do I Do?"

GET A REFERRAL TO A SPEECH PATHOLOGIST (THERAPIST).

Upon diagnosis of Parkinson's disease, there are a million things thrust at you. You are going through a lot. The best thing is to *research research research.* Taking control is important! Starting early is important! Early intervention helps stave off the progression of the disease!

Speech-language pathologists diagnose and treat speech and swallow disorders. NINETY percent of people with Parkinson's will have difficulty with their speech. Fifty to eighty percent will have difficulty swallowing.

It's not *if*; it's when.

Recent investigations show that there are early deficits in speech and swallow, which may not be reported to or noticed by the neurologist.

There are a lot of new things going on once you're diagnosed, and finding an SLP to manage your care should be one of them.
